Steelcase Workplace Advisor Study is a short-term space measurement engagement in your workplace which combines sensor data, survey data, analysis and expert consultation to reveal opportunities to serve people better and do more with less. Your participation in this study is important to us, and we’ve compiled a list of FAQs to help make the process transparent. Thanks to you, we’re creating a more effective workplace together.

What do the sensors do?

The sensors detect motion and ambient temperature using passive infrared (PIR) technology to determine whether anyone is present in a seat or space. The sensors are not capable of capturing images, video, audio recordings or other data.

Could the sensors be bad for my health?

No, the sensors are completely safe and pose no threat to your personal health. The sensors use PIR technology, which is commonly used in home security and lighting systems.

Could the sensors interfere with my phone or computer?

No, the sensors don’t interfere with personal technology or any other electronic devices.

Does the sensor know who I am?

No, the sensors are unable to identify specific individuals. Furthermore, data is captured and reported in such a manner that it cannot be traced back to a specific person.

Individual workstation data is made anonymous by being automatically recorded in groups. For example, if there are eight workstations in an area and four of them were occupied from 1–2 pm, the group of eight workstations would be reported as one unit with 50% occupancy for that time period.

Where is the data about my space stored?

Data is stored in secure, Steelcase-managed servers.

Can other companies see my space’s data?

Steelcase does not share client-identifiable information without customer consent. Steelcase will aggregate and use non-identifiable client data as a means to compare clients with similar demographic characteristics.

Will the sensors interfere with my work?

No, the sensors do not make any noise, move or have flashing lights that could distract workers.

What is Steelcase?

Steelcase is a global furniture manufacturer that employs people-centered design research to create work environment innovations.

What is Yanzi?

Yanzi is the hardware provider (sensors and gateways) for Steelcase Workplace Advisor Study. No client-identifiable data are shared with Yanzi.

Can I give feedback about my space?

Yes, as part of the study, your office coordinator will administer surveys inquiring about your perceptions, expectations and current use of the space.

CAN I MOVE THE SENSOR?

No, the sensor and any hardware must remain where it was installed. Moving sensors could create inaccurate data. In the event that a sensor falls, then try to re-attach the unit by pressing the tape against the underside of the desk or table for 10 seconds. If the sensor will not stay, then please contact your office administrator.
